Why is it that we put ash on the forehead?

Ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross as the words, “Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return” are spoken to us. The other formula which is used, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” emphasizes our call to continual conversion and holiness of life. This is a reminder of our mortality and the need to continue repentance. It serves as a reminder of how short life can be and is only a glimpse of the future we will have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The ashes Ash WednesdayNormally, they are made from blessed palm branches that were left over from the previous Palm Sunday. Before being distributed, the ashes will be sprinkled with Holy Water.

Ash WednesdayPrayer

Ash WednesdayThis is the first day in Lent, which falls six days before Easter. Because it relies on Easter’s date of Easter, it does not have a set date. It can fall on any day. It can happen as early as February 4, or late as March 10.

Ash WednesdayNamed after the custom of placing ashes onto the foreheads and heads of faithful people as a sign to God’s forgiveness and mourning. The ashes that are used are mostly gathered after the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned.

Lent is 40 days long (not counting Sundays). It is marked by repentance and fasting, reflection, celebration, and finally, death. This 40-day period is meant to mark Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness. The places he fasted, and the places where the Devil tempted Him. This period of lent is when believers are expected set aside time each year to fast similar. This is followed by a celebration marking Christ’s Resurrection and death.

Your Spirit gives us the strength to defeat the enemy.

Thank you Father for Easter’s arrival! Jesus is the only one who can defeat death! All praise and glory to His Name! Thank you Lord for saving us. As we go through the next few weeks, help us to appreciate the joy and importance of this season. Let us bear the good fruit of Your Spirit.

Thank you, Father, that the ashes on your forehead don’t represent your ultimate reality. Ash WednesdayHymns

“Never has it been so easy to live in half a dozen harmless worlds at once — art, music, social science, games, motoring, the following of some profession, and so on. We run the risk of wandering around, and the best are the ones that stay put. It is simple to see if your life is focused and if it is, where that focus lies. What is the first place our thoughts go when we wake up in the morning? When the day is stressful, where do our thoughts go? Ask God to help you see if all your attention is on Christ and His glory. Turn your soul’s vision to Jesus, and look and look at Him, and a strange dimness will come over all that is apart from Him.”
